With basic structural timber and nails, you’ll build a solid, durable table that’s perfect for gatherings.

The guide will walk you through each step, from constructing the legs to securing the tabletop, ensuring that your table is both sturdy and practical.

Materials

  • 70 x 35mm structural timber
  • 70mm timber screws
  • 16GA nails
  • Paint and/or stain

How to do it

Step 1: Prepare the Legs

Cut 8 pieces of 70 x 35mm timber to 600mm for the table legs.

Pre-drill 2 holes at each end of the leg pieces, using a 2.5mm drill bit.

Step 2: Assemble the Leg Frames

Arrange 4 of the leg pieces into a square.

Fix the ends of the legs together with 70mm timber screws.

Repeat this step to create 2 identical leg frames.

Step 3: Position the Leg Frames

Place the leg frames 800mm apart to create the structure for the table.

Step 4: Attach the Plinth Boards

Cut 2 plinth boards to 1100mm long.

Fix the plinth boards to the sides of the leg frames using 16GA nails, securing the legs in place.

Step 5: Prepare and attach the Table Top

Cut 6 plinth boards to 1300mm long.

Nail the boards to the top of the leg frames, securing each board with 2 nails at each end.

Step 6: Finish the Table Ends

Cut 2 final plinth pieces to 500mm long.

Secure these pieces to the ends of the table to complete the structure.

Congratulations on completing your DIY table!

Whether you use it for dining, serving, or as an outdoor workspace, your table is now ready to enhance your backyard setup.
